Skiing legend Theo Meiners passed away late this Thursday night after a tragic fall at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

Growing up skiing in the Chugach Mountains at Arctic Valley and Aleyeska in Alaska, Theo was one of the Alaska backcountry pioneers. Skiing with the likes of Doug Coombs, Theo racked up first descents. He was the founder and owner of Alaska Rendezvous Heli-Guides, a ski instructor at Jackson Hole, part of the Jackson Hole Air Force, and a ski patrol trainer in El Colorado, Chile. He made it his prerogative to understand the dynamics of avalanches and avalanche survival techniques, and then pass on his knowledge to help the rest of us stay safe in the backcountry.

Theo ran Alaska Rendezvous with his children Aidan and Ali. We send our best to his family and loved ones. He will be missed!

Theo was attending the Anchorage for the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW), a convention of leading snow scientists and avalanche experts held every two years. According to reports from Alaska news agencies, the 59-year-old Meiners fell from a second-floor escalator. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
