Telluride’s Nugget Theatre is one of the most unique movie theaters I have been too. This place is a real gem in the community and I personally love seeing movies here. It is a single screen theater in a old, historic building on Main Street. The Nugget Building was originally built in 1892 to house the First National Bank and the Telluride Power Company offices. The Telluride Power Company ran the Ames power plant down the road from town, which was the first A/C power plant in the world! Pretty cool fact about Telluride for sure! The theater opened in 1934 in the space of an old grocery store and still has a pretty old school/wild west vibe to it.

The theater is very intimate with better than expected projection and sound. They feature films here each year for the annual Telluride Film Festival, which just celebrated it’s 37th year! The interior of the theater is wood paneled with a ton of posters from previous Telluride Film Fests. They generally show two films a week, usually good selections to boot. The Film Festival also plays special screenings of independent films throughout the year, which is awesome for such a small community. They serve some great snacks, their popcorn is really good, and their prices are reasonable. They also have free water which is a bonus! It is $8 to see a film for adults, but they sell a 10 pack punch card for $60. This is a great deal if you like to see movies as often as I do. Some things to keep in mind when heading to the Nugget, they don’t take credit cards and they have a small single bathroom. Plan accordingly.
