New Belgium Brewing Co., the country’s third largest craft brewery behind Sierra Nevada and Boston Beer Co. is rumored to be building a new production facility near Asheville, NC.  The news, which was leaked from Asheville’s Mountain Express, comes just over 10 weeks after Sierra Nevada announced that they were building an entire new production brewery just 2o miles south of Asheville.

North Carolina Governer Bev Perdue is scheduled to make an “Economic Development Announcement” with other government officials and business leaders at 4pm on Thursday at the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.

Crews have been seen surveying the 7-acre piece of land rumored to be under contract for sale this week and all signs point to New Belgium pulling the trigger.

Seems like a major business move by New Belgium to keep Sierra Nevada’s growth in check.  The American southeast has become a hotbed in the craft beer industry the last few years as new breweries and brew pubs continue to open and sales volume continues to grow.

It will definitely be exciting to see how these two major league brewers coexist in an outer market once both facilities are up and running.

Cheers!
