Danger: “exposure or liability to injury, pain, harm, or loss”

A young man died in an avalanche not too far from where that video was shot. So, I’d say, yes, exposure to death means something is dangerous. BC skiing and riding in general is “dangerous,” in a general sense (but of course so are a lot of other things, different debate)–but “considerable” avalanche conditions make it much more specifically so, if you’re on the right slope.

      Ass.

    • The word

Bird is NOT the word today. ECTP24 is definitely dangerous or as we say in Colorado “scary moderate.” Test results like this give a false sense of stability, but when it goes, it goes BIG! It’s not the failure that is alarming; it is the mass propagation leading to bigger consequences that is dangerous.

I didn’t know Benny, but I think we all should honor him and those like him (so many these past several years) by getting the necessary education to ‘manage’ our risks. Even an emergency jetpack won’t save you in every circumstance.

Do it for the people that love you, they are ones that feel the pain.

in the video posted with the avalanche report, the failure layer was different… the old hard crust… am I right in seeing this video shows it failing within the new storm snow layer? so not just dangerous, but complexly so.

    • old patroller

Any pit is just a snapshot. Failure can be expected in these conditions not only within the new snow, but on the old crust, or even on isolated depth hoar to be found under the old crust layer. These conditions are highly unpredictable in a year like this, and should be approached warily. As always, time will provide more stability in the upper layers, but the underlying weaknesses (crust and potential depth hoar) won’t homogenize without a few weeks of warm weather at best.
      Beware

complex for sure. some pockets stable at a particular moment. another place, or another time and it’s slabby and unstable. damn. respect and vibes to a great person and skier.
