The snowpack is dangerous in Lake Tahoe right now.  We lost a fantastic person in an avalanche yesterday.

Here is some quality information about what is going on in Tahoe’s backcountry right now.

This snowpack analysis comes from the east ridge of Tamarack Peak in Lake Tahoe on March 1st, 2012.

Total Snow Depth = 145cms

New Snow = 80cms

Aspect = North

Incline = 35 degrees

Elevation = Tree line

Stratification = Light on top, dense in middle, on top of crust layers, below crust is a loose faceted layer

Results of Extended Compression Test = Failure on lower storm layer about 60 cms down from surface.  ECTP24 Q2.
