Large avalanche under the Nose Chutes at Squaw
Large avalanche under the Nose Chutes at Squaw

There was a lot of slide related action at Squaw Valley today. It seems that the adhesion of the snow was broken up by the recent rains causing large slides. The photos below are from a slide that ripped from just below the rocks under the Nose Chutes. I spoke with a patroller who said they first bombed the top and got some small sluff slides. When they bombed a bit lower in elevation, it ripped. This slide went down to the ground in places and slid from just below the rocks on the Nose Chutes, all the way past Mountain Run.

There were additional slides below the Fingers and on West Face. Basically that whole area of KT was susceptible to sliding.

Enjoy the skiing, BE SAFE and don’t hesitate to wear a beacon and carry a shovel and probe even when skiing in bounds.
