The Line of the Week

Squaw Valley USA

Storm Day Huck

Although difficult to shoot, storm days tend to be some of the best days on the hill. There’s nothing quite like getting out of that heated truck right into gusting winds, wet snow and low visibility. Once you finally creak and blow back and forth to the top of Red Dog or Squaw Creek skiing is the only thing that comes to mind. You know the weather is perfect when you are forced to stop every 20 turns to de-ice your goggles.

From there on out (if you’re lucky) it’s deep pow, refillable turns, short lines and maybe KT opens. While some are just soaking up the pow and/or sloshing through mash others like Joshua Plack are scoping. The visibility matters not when you know the landings, take offs and love being airborne.

“Dropping KT’s clean cliffs on storm days is a long time Squaw tradition. Scoring some air before the mad rush is an amazing bonus. Thank you to all the powder hounds and hippies I’ve dragged around to keep an eye on me. While I love skiing bottomless laps, waiting for blue sky to get the heart pumping is not my thing. As the feet pile up, I probe a few landings, do the math, then with no race or line-up install the appropriate hot tubs around KT.” – Joshua Plack
