Finals on Kachnia

With more than 160 skiers and snowboarders chasing a $15,000 purse, there’s no doubt that this year’s Salomon Extreme Freeride Championships at Taos, NM was one of the most competitive stops yet. The stop is the only Freeride World Tour qualifying event in the states. Meaning the winner is invited to compete on stops all over the world!

Colorado was represented well with Crested Butte sweeping the men’s and almost the women’s senior divisions. The Master’s men saw a Squaw Valley sweep as well, with Larry Segal taking 1st, followed by brothers David Saputo and Jon Saputo.

In the Junior division, Telluride’s Kyle Koenig took the win for the men, followed by Steamboat Spring’s Matthew White. Local skier Peter Hunt tied with Colorado athlete Finn Mahoney for 3rd.

The Junior girls were led by Taos athletes Eliza Donahue and Emma Patterson, who finished 1st and 2nd. Winter Park’s Jill Beasley took 3rd.

Well not counting juniors, there was 4 podiums by Squaw and 3 by NM athletes. Im no mathematician, Colorado was represented well and seeing a sweep by Squaw and CB was pretty glorious! Better luck next time!

Larry Segal not only won the masters but tied for third in the mens senior field! And, secured the second highest score for the final day. Good times and great snow in Taos.

Congrats to Larry for really stepping up in the finals…How the hell was i supposed to beat that score? I had a .3 lead going into the finals and still lost by a full point! He was a man on a mission.Congrats to Nancy Elrod for making the finals in the open women’s division, no small feat there! Good times for the “old” Squaw Crew!
