G3 Highball

Review: Elias Littenberg

I’ll be the first to admit, G3 isn’t a brand that immediately pops to mind when I’m trying to figure out what skis to pick up. I’ve used their skins, shovels, etc for years in the backcountry, but G3 skis? Never crossed my mind. Now here comes the all new G3 Highball, a pair of which has been leaning against my boss’ cubicle all week at Backcountry.com and has kept me distracted from my spreadsheet duties for too long.

G3 Highball

The Highball is sweet! A full length poplar core (think lightweight and snappy) is sandwiched between a layer of fiberglass above and below the core and augmented further with two titanal stringers. A thick sidewall underfoot tapers to a cap at the very tip and tail of the ski – cutting weight while providing a super stable platform underfoot. The sidewalls are angled slightly, but in a savvy move, are vertical along the ski’s edge. This helps to reinforce your edges, protecting them from serious damage if and when you bash your skis over rocks, roots, and all that.

The Highball is intended for big mountain, freeride skiing. A long-ish turn radius (29m with the 190cm version) with a slightly exaggerated sidecut in the tail allows you to redline anything downhill of you, but still shut things down if you need to stop now. Top it all off with a super mellow, full length rocker that is barely noticeable at first glance and you have a killer recipe for a Cottonwood ski. You won’t experience the typical rocker-chatter and your whole edge will get down on the snow when you’re carving. Check out the Highball, then arc massive turns down the face of Superior on the way to the Tram. Shred resort all day, huck cliffs, and jib natural features until beer thirty all on one stick (…from G3? Really…?). Really.
