In the continuation of the series I’ll call “Hikes Around Jackson for the Less Motivated,” for lack of a better name, we’ll visit Taggart Lake this week- perhaps the least ambitious of any of the hikes we’ve covered lately. While No Name Lake and Phelps Lake, are delightfully easy in their own right, Taggart Lake is a real gem for those not looking to exert themselves.

What Taggart Lake lacks in ambition it more than makes up for in beauty. After the short hike you’re rewarded with dramatic views of the grand and up Avalanche Canyon. Plus, the lake provides an opportunity to cool off, if you broke a sweat on the way up.

Once you enter Grand Teton National Park, the Taggart Lake trailhead is one of the first you come to on the left side of the road. This is another advantage if you’re just looking for a quick hike. From the trailhead, it’s about 1.6 miles with a slight elevation gain, crossing several streams, to Taggart Lake. From the lake you can continue toward Beaver Creek, about two miles, to get back to the original trail head. This makes the hike a loop rather than an out and back. So, if you’re not looking for crazy adventure but nice scenery, look no further than Taggart Lake- which I’ll go ahead and say is the easiest lake in the park to get to short of the ones that have parking lots.
