Has anyone seen more shooting stars than normal over the past few nights? I saw at least 8 last night over the Lake! It’s actually because the Perseid Meteor Shower is going off right now, with the peak still not scheduled to go down until early Saturday morning from 2-4:45 a.m. Squaw is even hosting a party around it Friday night.
If you feel so inclined, Squaw is hosting ahigh-country camp-out Friday night at High Camp. What’s scheduled to go down is campers can arrive and load via the cable car starting at about 5 p.m. From there, stargazing programs will start at around 6:30 p.m., and then viewing will start at about 10 p.m. Continental breakfast will also served Saturday morning. The camp-out party costs $75 for adults and $50 for children 15 and younger. Call Squaw at (530) 583-6985 for reservations.
In years past, Barker Peak up at the top of Blackwood Canyon used to harbor a sweet locals party centered around the yearly meteor shower. I’m not sure if that goes down anymore, but people used to hike up the mountain with drums, beverages, and a host of good people to spend some time away from any light pollution, and bask in the full glory of the natural light show. Spending time out on the lake is also a sure way to take in as much of the show as possible. If you have other plans Saturday, or don’t feel like staying up that late, head out to a dark spot after sunset and just look up for a while. You’re bound to see more than a couple of shooting stars fall over Tahoe.
