I’m going to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I go by the name Mason Mashon, and I’ve been kicking about in Whistler for quite a few years now. I will be bringing you all the latest happenings from Whistler this summer, as Jake has taken the time to recover from an injury. Though this winter was one of the best we’ve ever had here, I’m a firm believer that summer is the best time of the year to be in Whistler and I’m going to do my best to bring you along for the ride.
Now here’s a quick look at what’s happening in Whistler this week and through the May long weekend;
It looks like our spring monsoon will let up for the end of this week, and into the weekend, which should make for some great skiing and biking. Heck, why not do both in the same day, everyday.
Wednesday, May 18
Spring skiing and snowboarding on Blackcomb from 10-4. The alpine has opened after days of being closed, and there is some powder stashed in the North Facing keeps of the high alpine. Go get it.
Canucks vs. Sharks Game 2 – Hit up any number of the local pubs at 6 to catch the game. Brandy’s at The Keg has the best TV’s in town, but limited seating. Best to show up around 5 if you want a spot there.
Garfs newest night is the I Love Dirty Bass. Four DJ’s are teaming up to bring a heavy hitting night of drum and bass music. They’ll be mixing in a social media element as well, using an internet-radio broadcast and a screen projected live chat forum, the aim is to rope in listeners from all over.
Thursday, May 19
WORCA Toonie ride – Dust off the old cross country bike and get out there for the second toonie ride of the season. Sign up at Spruce Grove and join the community of mountain bike enthusiasts every week. You can pick up your WORCA membership for $40 bucks, and that covers you for the entire season of both Toonie rides, and PHAT Wednesday downhill races. This weeks ride will start at Spruce Grove and end at the ticket booth, with après following at the Longhorn Saloon.
Krafty Kuts is also a world reknown DJ, hailing from the UK and the #1 break-beat DJ in the entire world. This guy absolutely kills it. First 50 tickets are on sale for $10. You seriously won’t find a better deal on entertainment this good. Do yourself a favor, and go.
Friday, May 20
The much-anticipated opening of the Whistler Bike Park.
Last year we saw over a thousand riders show up to get first crack in the bike park. After a long winter, everyone is pumped to ride bikes and catch up with old friends. Tune your bike up, and get here. It’s going to be awesome.

Follow up your sick day of shredding with an après at the GLC to talk about the tails from the trails and how out of shape you are for biking.

Saturday, May 21 – More lift access Skiing and Biking on Whistler and Blackcomb.
The GLC is hosting an amateur video contest that night, in which case all the entrants need to have a video that’s produced in the bike park from whatever footage they have, and to be compiled onto DVD and handed in on Friday before 5. All the entries will be screened among a packed house at the GLC. The vibe will be awesome, and the winner will take home a Bike Park seasons pass, and a brand spanking new 3D GoPro set up.

Sunday, May 22 – Ride all day, and party all night.
Longhorns legendary locals night is an obvious choice. Go see Bram behind the bar, and order up a ‘Stoker’ for a good time.
