The MSR Pocket Rocket Stove is my go-to stove for the minimalist backpacking trip. It’s small, it’s light, and it’s reliable. At just 3 ounces, you won’t notice that it’s even in your pack. The unit attaches directly to MSR IsoPro fuel canisters, and lights without any priming or preheating- making it essentially a no-brainer. Despite its mini size, the stove packs a punch as well. On average, it takes me about 4 minutes to bring a quart of water to a boil. Obviously, it’s not for large groups- I couldn’t imagine making big meals with it. But, if you’re in a smaller group, it’s about as good as it gets.

It should be noted that the cooking surface can be a little narrow (about 3″ in diameter), so your cookware should be sized accordingly. Also, if you’re planning on boiling water as a means of purification, with only the Pocket Rocket, it might get a little frustrating and I’d pack a few extra canisters of fuel.
