squaw valley memorial day weekend may 2011

It’s already begun.  This morning there were no clouds whatsoever.  Now, it’s totally overcast and the winds have started up.  At the top of Squaw it’s currently 23F and the winds are gusting at 33mph.

RIGHT THIS SECOND snowflakes are falling in the Valley.  Wow, that happened quick.  From pure sun to overcast and snowing in about 45 minutes.  Gotta love these amazing Sierra Nevadas we’ve got here.

THE FORECAST FOR THE VALLEY FLOOR:

Saturday, May 28 – Snow after 11am.  High of 44F dropping to 28F by 5pm.  Winds up to 40mph.

Sunday, May 29 – Scattered snow showers.  High of 41F.  Winds up to 30mph.

Monday, May 30 – Partly Sunny.  High of 56F.  Winds up to 30mph.

NOAA.GOV:

* TIMING: SNOW WILL INCREASE BY LATE AFTERNOON NEAR THE SIERRA
  CREST...SPREADING ACROSS INTERSTATE 80 AND THE LAKE TAHOE BASIN
  THIS EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 2 TO 6 INCHES BELOW 7000 FEET...WITH 5 TO 9
  INCHES ABOVE 7000 FEET.

I bet that the highs today don’t reach the 40s even in the Valley. It’s bitter out right now with a nasty wind.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be a powder day, but it might not be enough new snow and wind to keep us from hitting the ice layer beneath. We’ll see.  At this point it may as well just snow two feet and give us an epic powder day on Sunday.

Monday looks like our best, and last, chance at something that resembles spring skiing.

Don’t ever forget to tell all your friends and family that you skied on “THE YEAR THERE WAS NO SPRING” at Squaw Valley
