So it’s raining in the valley, what the f@*% are you gonna do with your time. Well here are some events that might take the monotony out of staring out the window waiting for some clearer skies.

DEEP WINTER PHOTO CHALLENGE
COMING SATURDAY, JANUARY 15TH, 2011

6 photographers will battle it out on Saturday night, January 15th, for the 5th annual Deep Winter Photo Challenge presented by Arc’teryx and held on location in Whistler, BC, Canada at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. http://www.deepwinterphoto.com/

With the bar set high by previous season’s winners, this year’s event is bound to keep the entire audience captivated and on the edge of their seats.

  • photographers will have only 3 days to shoot during our legendary January storm cycle
  • each photographer will shoot with their own team of hand-picked athletes
  • on the 4th day each photographer will set their best images to music for the 1,000 person strong audience
  • a panel of judges will convene Saturday night to crown one photographer the “KING OF STORMS”
  • a total prize purse of $6,000 is up for grabs for the top three slideshows
  • this event is guaranteed to be an epic show of stormy imagery and die-hard grit and dedication

What: Avalanche Awareness Days Join Park Rangers and Squamish Search and Rescue at Garibaldi Park to look for avalanche clues in snowpack layers and See how avalanche transceivers work and test your skills at finding buried beacons. BC Park Rangers will also be on the Whistler Blackcomb Resort Boundaries to raise awareness of avalanche safety with out of bounds and backcountry skiers/riders.

What: Natural World Lecture Series: Rex Weyler Join the Greenpeace International co-founder and author for a discussion about ecology and economu.  By donation.

When: Sunday, Jan. 16, 8 p.m.

Where: Brackendale Art Gallery

What: QUEST LECTURE SERIES: Global Warming: What We Know and What We Don’t Know Join David Helfand, President of Quest University, for a lecture on global warming. Free admission. No registration required.

When: Wednesday, Jan.19

Where: Whistler Public Library, Community Room
